SHILLONG, Jan 06: Pointing out that the upreme Court has done away with the Section 8 (4) of the Representation of People Act which protects MLAs who are convicted by the court, the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) on Friday said that the Mawhati legislator, Julius Dorphang should be disqualified as an MLA should the court find him guilty of sexually assaulting a minor.
“He (Dorphang) should be immediately disqualified once the Court convicted him,” KHNAM state youth wing president Thomas Passah said in a statement issued on Friday.

Stating that the issue has caused a lot of embarrassment for the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Passah said, “We hope that the police would immediately arrest this law breaker.”
While appreciating the action taken by the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) in the case, Passah said that has urged that investigation into the case should be expedited to ensure that justice is served.
Reiterating its demand to set up fast track court in the state, he said, “It is a matter of serious concern that crimes against women and children is on the rise and time has come for all to fight together against such crimes.”
The KHNAM also urged the people and NGOs to come out and join hand in the proposed public rally called by the TUR and CSWO to protest against crimes against women and children.
