TURA, Dec 23: A battalion constable of Meghalaya police has been arrested after being on the run after allegedly raping a 17 year old girl in the village of Dimapara in South Garo Hills (SGH) district on Thursday.
The shocking incident took place on Thursday morning and was only known when the victim related the episode to the mother. An FIR was filed on Friday morning in the district headquarter of Baghmara though the exact version of the victim’s ordeal could not be recorded due to the absence of a lady magistrate. However rape was confirmed after a medical was conducted.
The constable identified asMinhoi Lawai had been on the run since the alleged rape on Thursday and did not report to his camp or to the nearby Gasuapara police station since the incident. He was arrested on Friday evening after he had returned to Baghmara.
“We had issued a notice of his arrest after a formal FIR was filed by the victim today (Friday). He had not reported to the battalion camp or the nearest Police Station. He has already been suspended from service and we had sent out search teams to look for him,” said acting superintendent in charge, Abraham T Sangma.
“This is a very sad case and shows the sick mentality of the person involved. Being a policeman his duty was to protect the girl and not violate her. We are all immensely disturbed on the development and urge the police teams to ensure his punishment. We don’t want another Nurul Islam like episode to be repeated,” said social activist Jaynie N Sangma from Tura in West Garo Hills.
In the infamous Nurul Islam case, the policeman was accused of the rape of two sisters from Ampati in South West Garo Hills (SWGH) district and later absconding allegedly with the tacit assistance of some policemen. He surrendered almost a year after the incident.
