38th Annual Koch Conference concludes

TURA, Jan 25: The 38th Annual Koch Conference which began on the January 23 last, concluded on Wednesday with a Workshop on Koch Art & Culture, Health and Sanitation at Bebedpara, Selsella, organized by the Meghalaya Koch Association.
Speaking at the occasion as the Chief Guest, Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Dr. Mukul M. Sangma acknowledged the grievances presented to him by the Koch Association and also praised the Association for taking up such innovative initiative which he felt would empower them in different ways particularly in the areas of employment and self reliance.

Along with the rest of the country the National Voters Day was celebrated at the State Central Library, Auditorium, Shillong Wednesday. Additional Chief Secretary, Government of Meghalaya, P B O Warjri graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.
As part of the National Voters Day celebration a Marathon race, painting and essay competition was organized by the Chief Electoral Officer, Shillong.

700 militants surrender arms in Assam

Guwahati, Jan 24: From guns to roses, life turned full circle for close to 700 militants from nine separatist groups in Assam Tuesday when they laid down arms to join the mainstream in the presence of union Home Minister P. Chidambaram.
In one of northeast India’s biggest surrender ceremonies in Assam’s main city of Guwahati, a total of 676 militants laid down weapons and in return received roses from the home minister.
“Today is a historic day as not very often one sees so many militant groups shunning the path of violence and joining the national mainstream,” said Chidambaram.
“Leave the past behind and look to the future positively. We assure that each one of you would be treated equally and be able to lead a life of dignity and honour,” he added.

Meghalaya takes home 3rd Mega Mr Northeast Title

SHILLONG, Jan 24:
Meghalaya on Tuesday evening added yet another feather to its cap as Raja Ghosh, representing Meghalaya, won the prestigious 3rd Mega Mr. Northeast pageant, the biggest manhunt in the region.
Nagaland playing host with State Academy Hall, Kohima as the venue for the event, saw a capacity crowd since this was also the first time that the event was organized outside Guwahati.
Nagaland Parliamentary Secretary, Social Welfare & Women Development, Chotisuh Sazo, was the Chief Guest for the Mega event.

12 outfits from NE call 13.5 hours bandh on Republic Day

Shillong, Jan 24:
The Coordination Committee (Corcom), an conglomerate of 12 militant outfits from North East India comprising of 7 Manipuri outfits besides HNLC,KLO,NLFT,TPDF,ULFA, have call for mass boycotting of the Republic Day, January 26, 2012 as a ‘mark of resistance against Indian occupation of North East Region (NER)’.
In a press statement released by Asst. Information and publicity Secretary (ULFA) self styled Lt. Arunudoy Asom, the outfits have called for shut-down or bandh in the entire NER from 1 am – 5.30 pm of January 26.
