MeECL employees, HTWA appeal to release abducted officials

SHILLONG, Jan 25:
The Officers and Staff of MeECL, Garo Hills have expressed their deep concern about the safety of their two employees, Assistant Executive Engineer A.  Pohtmi  and Junior Engineer B. Majaw, who  were  taken  away  from  their  residence  on the  night  of  January 24, 2012.
They also appealed to the leaders of the organization responsible, for their early and safe release on humanitarian grounds.

Umiam Lake selected as Mega Tourist Destination in India

SHILLONG, Jan 25:
Umiam Lake (Barapani) in Meghalaya has been selected as a Mega Tourist Destination during the year 2011-2012 by the Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of India, among the 45 Mega Tourist Destinations selected all over the country.
The selection process was in consultation with the concerned state governments/Union Territories Administrations on the basis of their future tourism potential.
Out of the 45 identified projects, 30 have already been sanctioned. For each identified mega destination and circuit, the Ministry of Tourism’s contribution and Central financial assistance is Rs. 25 crore and Rs. 50crore respectively under the scheme of “Product/Infrastructure Development for Destinations and circuits”.

Proud to be a Voter, ready to vote says Jowai

JOWAI, Jan 25: The 2nd National Voters’ Day was Wednesday observed in the Conference hall of the Deputy Commissioner, organized by the office of the Deputy Commissioner, Jaintia Hills, Jowai Election Branch, Jowai.
The program was attended by the District heads, Senior citizens, MDCs, students and new voters. Electoral Photo Identity Card and badges with a theme “Proud to be a Voter, ready to vote” were distributed to 20 newly enrolled voters, from Chutwakhu, Mission Compound, Mynthong and Iawmusiang localities.
Speaking as a Chief Guest, Deputy Commissioner, Jaintia Hills, Jowai, T. Dkhar in the felicitation program for newly enrolled voters said, this day is commemorated to create awareness to the voters and newly enrolled voters about their voting rights.

JNNURM funds if not used, will go to performing states

NEW DELHI, Jan 25: The Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation (HUPA) conducted a Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) All India review meeting here on Tuesday evening. The meeting was chaired by Secretary, HUPA, Arun Kumar Misra.
Since the JNNURM is in its last year of implementation, therefore the major focus of the meeting was to review the non-started projects in the States and Union Territories and the difficulty faced by States/UTs in commencing the projects.

National Voters’ Day celebrated at Tura, EPIC given to fresh voters

TURA, Jan 25: The Office of the Deputy Commissioner (Election) & District Election Officer, West Garo Hills, Tura celebrated National Voters’ Day on Wednesday at D.C.’s Park.
Starting from the January 25 last year, the foundation day of the Election Commission of India, is being celebrated as National Voters Day throughout the country. The initiative is expected to give youth a sense of citizenship, empowerment, pride and participation and also inspire them to exercise their franchise when the occasion comes.
Gracing the occasion as the Chief Guest, Executive Chairman, MBOSE & Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, Education Department, E.P. Kharbhih said that such celebrations reminded us of the wonderful underlying values enshrined in the constitution.
