239 power tillers distributed to farmers in Garo Hills

TURA, Feb 27: Beneficiaries of eight blocks of West Garo Hills received Agricultural machinery under Backward Region Grant Fund (BRGF), funded by District Rural Development Agency and implemented by District Agriculture Office, West Garo Hills, Tura at New Tura Playground on Monday.
A total of 239 power tillers, six mini tractors, paddy reapers and other machinery were distributed to farmers.
Speaking on the occasion as Chief Guest, Dr Mukul Sangma, said BRGF, which started in 2007-2008, was initiated in three districts of Meghalaya that include West Garo Hills, South Garo Hills and Ri Bhoi District with the sole objective of developing the rural areas.

MPHRC demands immediate compensation for Rajabagan victims

SHILLONG, Feb 27:
The Meghalaya Peoples Human Rights Council (MPHRC) has strongly urged the government to find means for restoring immediate peace and tranquillity in the the Rajabagan market in Ri Bhoi district, which resulted to the gross damage of around  87 shops and other properties belonging to different communities.
While appreciating the action taken by the District Administration under the stewardship of Deputy Commissioner of Ri Bhoi District, Akash Deep for the steps taken to arrange the basic facilities like food, shelter and water for the displaced the MPHRC has urged the state government to also provide an immediate compensation to the affected people.

CFHR welcome proposal for enhancement of salaries

Hailing the State government’s decision to enhance salaries of the teacher’s at the pre primary schools level in the state, the Citizen Forum on Human Rights (CFHR) at its General meeting on Monday maintained that it is a great improvement considering the present salary.
“The government has proposed enhancement to Rs 6000 per month for the teachers which is a great improvement considering the present salary which is only Rs 1800”, CFHR president D Kharbuli informed reporters after the general meeting of the forum.

Meghalaya Home Minister visits Rajabagan village

Shillong, Feb 27:
Meghalaya Home Minister H D R Lyngdoh Monday visited Rajabagan village in Meghalaya-Assam border where miscreants had ransacked and set afire over 20 houses and shops last Saturday.
"I met the affected families and saw the damage with my own eyes. I have directed the district administration to assess the loss for which necessary compensation will be paid," Lyngdoh said.
According to Lyngdoh, 22 shops and 11 houses were gutted in a fire.

Central Trade Unions declare general strike opposing policies by Govt

SHILLONG, Feb 27:
The employees and workers of various sectors of Central Government, Banks, Insurances, CRU and Central PSU of Meghalaya will be observing  one day General Strike  along with the  rest of the country on Tuesday.
The strike is called by all the Central Trade Unions, All India Federation of Employees & Workers of the country who are against the Anti-people, Anti-Employees Policy and against the Economic Policy of the Government.
It may be mentioned here that this is the first in the Trade Union History of the Country, all the Central Trade Unions which are CITU, AITUC, INTUC, BMS and others have jointly declared  this one day Country wide General Strike l.
A Workers rally will also be held at Parking Lot, opposite CTO Building, Vivekananda Road, in the city on Tuesday  by The Striking Employees & Workers of Greater Shillong at 12 noon.
