Foundation stone for VIRTA laid at Mawpdang

Shillong, March 02: Meghalaya Chief Minister, Dr Mukul Sangma Friday laid the foundation stone of the Vendrame Institute of Rural Training and Animation (VIRTA) at Mawpdang, Shillong in the presence of the Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Charles Pyngrope who is also the MLA of the area.
It may be mentioned that the Institute is being established by the Selesian Congregation of Don Bosco in honour of Fr Constantine Vendrame, an Italian priest who had worked in the Khasi Hills from 1924 to 1967.

IAF conducts major 'war games' in North East fearing Chinese aggression

With security analysts fearing that China may resort to territorial grabs through a ‘major military offensive’, especially in Arunachal Pradesh or Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has embarked upon conducting a major exercise Codenamed “Pralay” (Apocalypse).
IAF’s Eastern Air Command (EAC) commenced the exercise on February 29.
The joint Army-Air operations by the EAC and Eastern Command of the Indian Army, is holding the exercise in the Brahmaputra and rest of eastern region of India.
This ‘annual’ exercise is aimed at testing the combat potential of the Air Force in various roles- Air Defence , strike operations, offensive ground support operations, counter air operations, Electronic Warfare , joint operations with the Army including special operations by day and night.

Assam Police commandos deployed at Langpih

NONGSTOIN, March 01:
The ongoing tussle between the Assam - Meghalaya state police took another turn as one truck loaded of Assam Police Commandos were deployed at langpih at Assam-Meghalaya disputed area on Thursday.
A source mentioned that the Assam Police commandos arrived at 12 noon and headed directly to the Langpih construction area where an order party were busy making makeshift house on the official house of Hima Raid Mynshaw.
The source further added that luckily there were no labors working at the construction site at the time the commandos came in the vicinity as the commandos of Assam Police could have arrested them.
It is believed that this effort from the Assam police is to monitor the construction of Langpih market undertaken by the Deputy Commissioner, West Khasi Hills.
ASP, G.D Kharlang informed that no additional security was deployed by Meghalaya though they are alert to tackle any eventuality in the disputed area.

Adverse travel advisories affect foreign tourist trade to NE

Shillong, March 01: Adverse travel advisories by different countries robbed the North East of foreign visitors and states there should improve their image to counter this.
"We lose out on a huge tourist potential because of the travel advisories from foreign embassies," Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma said.
"The North East is perceived as a disturbed area in general by foreign embassies present in India, and therefore, tourists coming to India and are willing to travel to the NE are advised not to do so," he said on the sidelines of a workshop on Avenues for Entrepreneurship in Tourism here.
