Shillong, March 28:
Police have sounded an alert in Borsora area after heavy exchange of firing took place between security forces and the Garo hills National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants in remote coal-belt area of West Khasi Hills district Wednesday morning.
According to the police, during routine operation in the Nongjri – Borsora area security forces spotted about 10-15 GNLA cadres. The militants fired on the patrolling troops prompting the police force to retaliate, a senior police official said.
“The exchange of fire took place at about 7 am this morning and lasted for about 15 minutes. However, the militants managed to escape in the thick forested area during the cross fire. No one was injured during the operation,” the police official said.
The area where the encounter took place is in south western part of the district. The area is close to South Garo Hills and also the Bangladesh border, which makes the area vulnerable for easy infiltration across the inter-district and international border.
