SHILLONG, May 31: Irked over the indifference matted out to North East students in the main land India, different students organization under the banner â€˜North East Studentsâ€™ Organization (NESO)â€™, on Thursday publicized its first phase of agitations by holding a sit-in-protest on June 7 at Guwahati.
Addressing a press conference here, NESO, Information and Publicity Secretary and Former KSU president, Samuel B Jyrwa said, â€œWe have decided to stage a one-day sit-in-protest in Guwahati on June 7, over the failure of the central government to address various issues affecting the North East region.â€
â€œThe decision to go for a sit-in protest in the gateway of North East (Guwahati) was taken after the general council meeting of the NESO which was held at Guwahati on May 29,â€ Jyrwa informed.
He also informed that it is the first phase of agitation to demand the central government to address the issues pertaining to the North East Region (NER).
â€œDiscrimination against our students (North Eastern) studying in different parts of country is one of the serious issues which have tormented us. We demand the government to safe-guard the lives of North eastern students studying in main land India,â€ the publicity secretary of NESO asserted adding â€œThe other issues of concern are, influx, lifting of the Armed Forces Special Powerâ€™s Act (AFSPA) from NE region, separate Ministry for North East and scrapping of the Indo Nepal Treaty from NE.â€
He also added that due increase illegal infiltrators from the neighboring countries and to keep a check the NASO also demands the implementation of the â€˜Inner-Line Regulationâ€™ permit in the entire North East.
Furthermore, Jyrwa also informed that the sit-in-protest would be followed by â€˜marchâ€™ and â€˜sit-in-strikeâ€™ in front of the Governorâ€™s House of all the North Eastern states, the dates for which will be decided on June 7 in Guwahati.
