Shillong, June 30:
The Plain Belt area of the Garo Hills been hit severely by flood and the water level continues to rise.
Sources informed that flood has hit areas from Tikrikilla to Hellaydigang three – days back.
All roads have been submerged including the electric poles. This has rendered the affected areas power less for the past three days.
Interestingly, the flood has been caused by rising water level of Brahmaputra and not persistent rain. In fact, there has been no rain for the past 2-3 days in the areas. This is direct impact of the Assam flood due to increase in water levels of rivers there, the worst being the Brahmaputra.
Since road transport has been cut off and no power, people are dealing with life miserably. Also, there has been no relief yet provided by the district administration.
People have been surviving on their harvest from the paddy fields.
Schools are closed, shutters of shops are down, and the case does not seem to improve anytime soon.
However, political leaders and district administration have already inspected the affected areas and relief is expected by Monday, sources revealed.
