SHILLONG, June 30: The State Bank of India (SBI) Saturday decided to close-down all its branches in Garo hills region for 24 hours on July 2, as mark of protest against the abductor who have kidnapped one of its employees recently.
The unanimous decision was taken at an emergent meeting convened by the State Bank of India Staff Association (SBISA) held on Saturday.
Mentionably, recently an accountant of the SBI Songsak Branch, East Garo hills, A Halim was abducted by armed militants from Tasek, East Garo hills while he along with the Branch Manager Prodip Barman was traveling towards Duhnoi (Assam). However, Barman was released by the abductors. It is also learnt that abductors have demanded up to Rs 25 lakh for the release of Halim.
The meeting also resolved to hold a procession march to appeal to the abductors for the safe and unharmed release of Halim.
â€œAll transactions in all the SBI branches in Garo hills region will remain closed on July 2â€, a member of the SBISA said.
The bank association also demanded the state government to facilitate for the safe release of its accountant.
Meanwhile, police have intensified their operations to rescue the bank employee.
â€œWe have intensified our operations to safe release the abducted employeeâ€, a police officer in the district said.
