Meghalaya Chief Minister, Dr Mukul Sangma on Tuesday formally inaugurated the East Jaintia Hills District of Meghalaya, Khliehriat by unveiling a plaque to mark the auspicious occasion at the GAD complex Khliehriat on Tuesday.
Speaking at the inauguration of the East Jaintia Hills District at Khliehriat, Dr Sangma urged the people of the new district to extend their support to the government and thus enable it to serve them and fulfill their aspirations. Stating that there have been too many instances where the government has not been permitted to do its work, he urged the people not to waste time by resorting to agitations.
In this regard, Dr Sangma said that there has been remarkable change in the last two years which has enabled the government to perform its duties.

Power crisis now trips 19 states, 600 million people hit

New Delhi, July 31 (IANS): The power crisis that hit northern India turned into a larger blackout a day later Tuesday to affect as many as 19 states not just in the north but also in the east and northeast, paralysing essential services such as rail and metro operations, besides causing massive traffic snarls.
"Grid incident occurred at 1 p.m., affecting the northern, eastern and northeastern grids. The system is under restoration," said the official website of the eastern grid, among the such systems managed by the state-run Power System Operation Corp Ltd.

Purno to float new “tribal political party”

SHILLONG, July 31:
Though he did not make it to Raisina hills, Former Lok Sabha Speaker PA Sangma is all set to go for a new “political party” – with a common aim in mind that is to unite all “tribal” leaders of the country under one party.
“The Core Committee of Tribal Forum of India will soon meet at New Delhi to discuss the possibility of forming a new party which will be tribal centric but open for all”, PA Sangma told reporters here.
He said, “The delegation of the committee would also meet the Election Commission of India (ECI) on this regard”.

Police interrogating Champion; mystery shrouds GNLA Chief’s arrest modus operandi

SHILLONG, July 31:
The State police is in the process of interrogating the Chief of the banned militant outfit – Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) Champion Sangma who was arrested after being pushed back to India by Bangladesh authority on Monday, police said here on Tuesday.
“Interrogation process against the militant is underway”, State Director General of Police (DGP) N Ramachandran said here.

Inconsistency in DTO office irks public

SHILLONG, July 31:
The inconsistency in the functioning of the office of the District Transport Officer (DTO) of East Khasi hills has to a great extent “irked” the people of the district who are depending on the services of this important office.
The problem arises out of the irregular coming of the District Transport Officer (DTO) Chimborlin L Nongbri to the office as he is holding charges of other offices which was entrusted to him by the state government. The officer finds it too difficult to balance and due to this most of the works are pending.
