Shillong, March 14: Sticking to their earlier commitment, the Hill State People's Democratic Party (HSPDP) and Khun Hynñiewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) have affirmed their support to Rev PBM Basaiawmoit for the upcoming Lok Sabha election 2014 for the Shillong Parliamentary seat.
This decision was taken by the two regional parties in a meeting held at the residence of HSPDP President, Hoping Stone Lyngdoh on Friday.
According to the leaders of the two parties, they decided to stick to their decision of supporting Rev Basaiawmoit as the common candidate of the two parties since the United Democratic Party (UDP) has already decided to field West Shillong MLA, Paul Lyngdoh, as the party candidate.
Earlier, the HSPDP and KHNAM had proposed to the UDP to have a common candidate who would be supported by all the three regional parties in the forthcoming Lok Sabha poll from Shillong constituency.
But the UDP had proposed to the two parties to support Paul as the candidate.
The two parties had even suggested that if UDP fielded a candidate other than Paul, then they could have withdrawn their support to Rev Basaiawmoit and supported the new common candidate.
"Since the UDP was not ready to find a common candidate and went ahead with their decision to field Paul Lyngdoh, the HSPDP and KHNAM also decided to stick to their earlier decision to support the candidature of Basaiawmoit," HSPDP legislator Witting Mawsor and KHNAM president Pyndapborthiaw Saibon said.
However, KHNAM and HSPDP maintained that the Lok Sabha election has nothing to do with the All Regional Parties Alliance (ARPA) in which the three parties are working together in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).
