SHILLONG, Sept 29: Staff of Shillong District Jail on Saturday staged an strike and demanded the resignation of DG (prisons) Kulbir Krishan for allegedly harassing them and abusing his powers by exploiting them and running the jail according to his whims and fancies.
The 40 odd staff of the jail including warders, officiating staffs and others staged protest at jail premises.
â€œWe have decided to cease-work till the DG (Prison) is removed from his office,â€ jail staff told reporters here.
Among the many harassments from the DG(Prison), some of the most prickling ones include allegation of smuggling drugs inside jail, preparation of salaries, extended duty hours at his house, his wife using the jail staff for personal purposes, suspending wardens on fictional grounds, withholding salaries, among others.
SHILLONG, Sept 29: 65 â€“ year old Rev Sang Kunga Miller, more fondly known as Pastor SK Miller, was on Friday arrested for allegedly raping a 15 year old girl who came to study and was staying at New Life Home - a hostel owned by the accused at Nongrimaw area, Laitumkhrah.
Following the victims complaint, Civil Society of Women Organization (CSWO) headed by its President, Agnes Kharshiing lodged a complaint on the accused.
SHILLONG, Sept 29: Traditional heads and NGOs on Friday decided to call upon the Election Commission of India (ECI) and the state government to recognize the â€œcertificatesâ€ issued by the village dorbars and also demanded that the electoral hearings should be extended at village dorbars level in order to ensure that â€˜no doubtful votersâ€™ gets to enroll their name in the electoral roll of the state.
After the meeting held between ten prominent NGOs of the state along with 70 village heads from Shillong region, Federation of Khasi-Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), President Joe Marwein said â€œwe have decided to ask the state government and Election Commission to recognize the residential certificate issued by the village dorbars.â€
SHILLONG, Sept 29: Miscreants at wee hours on Saturday morning entered the Phillips Radio Engineers shop at GS road, Shillong and robbed valuable items and cash from the shop, police said.
According to police, miscreants entered the shop from the top of the roof of Mohini store adjacent to Phillips Radio Engineers shop at GS road.
SHILLONG, Sept 29: The local residents residing at Kenchâ€™s Trace and Bishnupur area are irked over the shortage of drinking water in the area.
It is learnt that the shortage of drinking water has been caused by the haphazard construction of PHE pipelines in the area which has destroyed many municipal pipelines in the area.
