SHILLONG, June 26: The main problem which lies in Garo Hills (GH) in terms of militancy and dacoity is the socio-economic condition of the people living in the region, observed former Leader of Opposition and leader of National People’s Party (NPP), Conrad K Sangma.
Talking to Meghalaya Times, Conrad said the state government has not been able to do enough in the western part of the state.
“We should understand the problem instead of looking for an outcome,” Conrad said adding “All we are seeing is outcome of the problem.”
According to him, government might be proposing different schemes but these schemes are not taking shape at the grass root level.
“Without whatever schemes being provided for the people in general of the area of Garo Hills, shapes are not taking place at the grass root level,” Conrad said.
He also said that in order to maintain peace and prosperity in the region toting up security forces is not the answer.
“I understand that there is a need to build and crop security forces, especially when they (government) are fighting against insurgency and other elements (dacoits, mischief mongers). But it will not solve the problem. The government should maintain the socio-economic condition of the people,” Conrad observed.
He opined that if the socio – economic condition of people of the region are stable, there will not be any instances of such activities happening.
Force should be only when all other mechanisms have failed, but only to maintain peace, he said.
“If such actions are not dealt than the State government should seek help from the centre in regards to acquiring more para-military forces especially in the border areas, which needs perfect manning,” the former LO asserted.
