Shillong, April 10: The Meghalaya Assembly on Wednesday resolved to empower the High Power Committee (HPC) to select the most suitable site and take all necessary steps for the expeditious construction of the much-awaited new building of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
Moving the resolution in the Assembly on Wednesday, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prestone Tynsong said the newly constituted High Power Committee in its last meeting had proposed to recommend to the House to empower the committee to select the site and decide on the construction of building of the Assembly building.
The Assembly does not have a permanent building since the old building was destroyed in a fire way back in 2001.
The resolution would facilitate the Speaker A T Mondal, who heads the High Power Committee, to find a suitable plot and undertakes the construction of the Assembly. The committee which on Tuesday has decided to shift the location from Tara ghar, the famous heritage house, in view of the court case following a PIL filed by a dissent group of the public.
In 2004, a move by the Dr DD Lapang led coalition government to construct the complex in Mawdiangdiang in the New Shillong Township was struck down by the House. The house had resolved to construct the new building either at the old site or any other suitable place within the vicinity of Shillong city.
Tynsong said decisions were made to build the New Assembly building at various other locations over the years, but the said proposals could not be implemented till date because of various reasons.
Earlier, senior leader from the Garo Hills and former chief minister Salseng C Marak lamented that the new building is taking far too long to be constructed and it was high time the state had its own Assembly building. He urged the committee to speed up the finalization of the site.
