Drola Khongjoh set to contest from Mawkynrew Constituency

SHILLONG, Oct 31:
While still vying for an Indian National Congress (INC) ticket, agriculture officer Drola Khongjoh is all set to contest from Mawkynrew Constituency in the upcoming Meghalaya Assembly Elections 2013.
Khongjoh will be contesting against the sitting UDP legislator Remington Pyngrope and veteran politician Martil N Mukhim of Meghalaya Democratic Party (MDP).
It is learnt that Khongjoh has already taken his voluntary retirement from the Agriculture Officer’s post for preparing for the ensuing elections.
At present, Khongjoh is being supported by strong supporters of Block Congress, Mahila Block Congress and Youth Block Congress of Mawkynrew.
Mentionably, during the last elections, Khongjoh had contested from Dienglieng Constituency from NCP ticket when he first joined politics.

ANVC(B) surprised with surveillance system installation in GHADC

Surprised over the newly installed surveillance system in Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), ANVC(B) Wednesday said “Fastest development done in the Council in decades is the installation of the surveillance camera and the security system.”
“It was a record breaking initiative which would have been more appreciable if they were that serious on other issues related to the common people,” the outfit said while sarcastically adding “We have never seen in decades a development taking place in the council so fast.”

Meghalaya banks on Rs 65 crore SSSWM to manage its wastes

SHILLONG, Oct 31:
With an aim to make Meghalaya a pollution – free State, state Urban Affairs department is implementing the Sewage System and Solid Waste Management (SSSWM), for which, six locations have already been identified.
State Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh on Wednesday convened a meeting to discuss on the implementation of the project with the different concerned traditional institutions of Shillong city where a brief presentation was made by the implementing agency – MOTT McDonald Company.
“Six locations have already been identified for the purpose of installing the sewage treatment-plants in and around the city in the first phase of the project,” officials from the company said during the presentation here.

‘Treasure House’ North East lacking exposure: Mooshahary

SHILLONG, Oct 31:
Meghalaya Governor Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary Wednesday said North East including Meghalaya is a “treasure-house” in term of arts, culture, literature and music but the region still lacks proper exposure in the absence of proper platform.
“In this context, government is trying to come up with such initiatives to ensure that such talents of the state gain momentum and advancement in the field of literary, music and other creative arts,” he said.
The Governor was giving his inaugural address at the first Shillong Creative Arts, Literature and Music Festival – 2012 held here in the city on Wednesday.

Clamped

The Shillong Traffic Police on Tuesday clamped 37 vehicles that were illegally parked within the Laitumkhrah and Sadar Police Station jurisdiction and realized fine to the tune of Rs 17,900. Tuesday was the first day of the clamping devices being put to operation as a means to stop illegal parking around the Shillong city.
