Shillong, Dec 29:
Employees of Meghalaya’s only BPO, SS Netcom, on Thursday staged dharna for being expelled by the company’s management without any proper intimation.
But the management was quick to call back its agitated employees, though after media intervention.
About 60 employees had been asked by the company to leave due to a change in its business policy which required downsizing the staff strength.
Talking to reporters, the employees complained that their names have been displayed in the notice-board on the pretext of down-sizing plan of the company with effect from next one month.
These agitated employees were working as agents in the company which is in partnership with the Aircel Company. They all expressed shock over the way company had asked them to leave.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of  SS Netcom Debopriyo Deb tried to reason out that there has been a plan to downsize some of the work strength based on their performance as per the contract agreement.
“And as such we have put up names of about sixty with one months notice. However, after they lodged their grievances we have decided not to go for any retrenchment and recalled the employees. they are all back on the floor and working” he said.
He also clarified that it is not a direct decision taken by the company. “Since it is an evolving industry, everything depends on the business of our clients, so at times we go for additional recruitment drive while, when the magnitude of business is down we have to re-structure our work force according to the need,” he stated.
Dev also added that the company has now decided releasing of agents in a phase wise manner.
