Shillong, Dec 03:
Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) Working President Deborah C. Marak, has taken over as President of MPCC on Friday as the sitting President, Dr Friday Lyngdoh is ailing and going for treatment outside the state.
Marak is no stranger when it comes to looking after the MPCC office as Working President, this time, the AICC has appointed her to take over as President MPCC for a month with effect from December 2.
Talking to Meghalaya Times, Marak affirmed that she has been given charge of MPCC President’s office only for a month.
But, sources revealed that the AICC is concerned over the constant deteriorating health of Dr Lyngodh and unhappy since it is rendering him hapless in taking important party decisions.
Since Marak has been time and again filling for the absence of Dr Lyngdoh, sources said the AICC seems to have decided to put her in the post full - fledged.
Interestingly, even though officiating, she has been given liberty to take important decisions; which otherwise is not the case in any other officiating situation.
When asked if MPCC will see a change, she replied that things will continue as they were before and that MPCC will keep functioning as a team.
But, with candidates filling their nomination for the party ticket for 2013 general election, this sudden change at the crucial juncture is seen as an attempt to curb the malpractices in MPCC functioning when it comes to awarding the party ticket.
Also, with the AICC emissaries coming to state for visiting certain blocks, it is seen as another positive assurance of AICC’s faith on Marak.
Marak was the 1st woman Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya and thereafter, the first woman Working President of MPCC and now after taking over as President MPCC she becomes the 1st Woman President of MPCC in Meghalaya.
Recently she was presented with Indira Gandhi Achievers Award.
As a woman leader from remote Garo Hills, Marak has made immense contribution towards development of Meghalaya especially for Garo Hills. In the last week, UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi approved a high level committee for the coming Assembly Polls in Meghalaya in which Marak’s name was approved in the committee along with Chief Minister and two former Chief Ministers of Meghalaya.
