In the olden days, nearly every village had public criers. Even now, some villages in the remote corners still do. For any information required to be disseminated to the public among the villagers, these professionals were used. Before Shillong grew into a big town and subsequently a city, it was comprised of a number of localities where public criers were common.
The practice adopted by the public criers was to initially catch the attention of the public. So they resorted to the use of big drums upon which they beat with a pair of specially made sticks for producing rhythmic sound which reverberated to all nooks and corners. This served as an introduction and after which public criers invited the attention of the villagers followed by announcement for which they were sent to perform. Naturally, public criers used to have loud and clear voice and they charged substantive amount for their services. At the time of announcement, there were a number of public  criers who went from one corner of the village to another corner in groups along with the Drummers and they rotated in performing their duties which were usually carried out at convenient hours of the night. Sometimes after doing the round of the village for some days, the vocal chords would be affected and the voices would become hoarse

Aging & Old Age

Posted in CFM

Everybody is aware that with the passage of time, people become older. Aging is, therefore, a process which cannot be reversed. The older the people become, the greater is the probability of death. When people reach a certain age, the motor of their bodies slow down, their agility and mobility is affected, they no longer move faster or freely as at the time when they were young. From the time one is born to the time o death, it is known as a life span.
The Bible records that the life span of people in ancient times was many hundreds of years. Gradually, it became reduced until it stabilizes at 120 and the further declined to reach the figure of three scores and ten. How this was possible or whether it was all true, not much research was done in this aspect. What made ancient people live longer is a matter of hypothetical conjecture. Nevertheless, people are interested in maintaining their youth and in the preservation of their longetivity. Man is always in search of the elixir of life and he will never rest until he hopefully finds it.
Gray hair, wrinkled skin, slowness in motion, loss of hearing and memory are symptoms of old age. Generally once ageing sets in the frequency of sickness is quite often. Nowadays, when people reach the age of 60 they are categorized as senior citizens and the government bestows upon them some rights and privileges, including concessions in traveling by train or plane. Even in regarding to bank deposits, they are given an extra 0.5 percent rate of interest over the normal rates.
In State Government service, employees retire at 58. at one time the retirement was increased to 60. But due to the rising rate of unemployment among educated youths, it was reverted back to 58. In Central Universities, teachers retire at 65.
Women, for reasons demographers and scientists are yet to find the answer, generally live longer than men. It has observed that people who come from long – lived families live longer than others. On the contrary, those who come from short – span families can lengthen their duration of life by taking good care of themselves, though they cannot compete with those of the above category. Modern affluent diseases like blood pressure, diabetes, and cancer, however are taking a heavy toll of human lives.

Alternative Health Care of Ayush

Posted in CFM

India has made great progess in health determinants over the past few decades. The dreaded diseases like tuberculosis, plaque and malaria which were once the terror that claimed countless lives were eradicated .Consequently, death rates went down and population started going up. Infant mortality rate and maternal mortality rate in Meghalaya which were, till a bout two decades ago, the highest in the country were brought down substantially through proper health care and substantially through proper health care and improved nutrition. Infact, the report by the National Family Health Survey (NFHS), Government of India highlighted that the figures for Meghalaya with regard to these two health indices were higher than those of the BIMARU states. This word stands for the states of Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh of central India whose health indices were considered to be extreme.
Fortunately, the state Government took serious note of the health infrastructure and health care.Remadial measures were adopted. Strict supervision and monitoring were carried out. As a consequence, the rates climbed down and it is expected that further improvement will take place. With the introduction of the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM), a rigorous Central Scheme, hopes are soaring.
The ancient Indians had their own rich and traditional system of health care. So also people in the isolated hills of North East had developed their indigenous system after years of observation and experimentation. They depended on the locally available herbs, weeds, ferns and plants. Until the advert of the colonial rulers who introduced the allopathic system of medicine, local people had been relying on their age-old traditions. In course of time, they switched over to the new system and abandoned the old ones. In the remote villages and hamlets, however, due to lack of proper communication and transportation coupled with poverty and ignorance, people still stick on to the older practice.

Ancient Khasi’s Concept of Environment.

Posted in CFM

The ancient philosophers of the Khasi Pnar society hypothesized that Earth which brings forth life and sustains it was to be considered as divine Mother. Its five children which feed and nourish all forms of life- Sun, Moon, Fire, Water- were to be treated with respect. For the earth to grow and prosper so that human beings could heave peacefully and comfortably for generations to come, certain rules and regulations were laid down to be strictly followed, on pain of death if necessary.
The concept and practice by our ancient thinkers on environment was sublime civilizations, forest were looked upon as sacrosanct where the Gods dwell.  Streams and rivers give life to humans and make the crops sprout and flourish. The sun is the source of light and energy. At night the guides the weary travelers. Fire is a cleansing agent and the breeze of the wind cools human temperament. Their respective roles were recognized since days of old. Therefore, they were placed on high pedestals and accorded high honour and prestige to the extent that their excessive reactions were thought to be acts of anger and vengeance against the wrongdoings and ill-treatment by weak-minded human creatures. To appease them, the elders advised the people to perform religions sacrifice and offering to God Almighty so that He would control their behavior.

Among the elderly, the wired world is terror for some, delight for others

Posted in CFM

Sam Allis They grew up in a time when technology meant a wall telephone, a TV set with three channels, and a radio. Today they are in the midst of a monumental transition. While some senior citizens are handling the rapid rise of the Internet age well — e-mailing, posting family photos on Facebook, paying bills online — for many it has prompted sheer terror.
People have always faced changes as they age — cable TV, voice mail, call waiting — but no generation has been thrown so much change, so fast, as today’s seniors. Those who have adjusted feel confident. Those who have resisted feel vulnerable, oblivious to how critical the computer will be to help them stay in touch with friends, order food, or buy prescription drugs as they become more housebound.
If there is a silver lining, it is this: The next generation of seniors — the baby boomers — will not have to go through this wrenching change. They know how to reboot, IM, and tweet.
