As the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers refuse to hold Narendra Damodardas Modi accountable for the disastrous performance of the party in the December 11, 2018 verdict of five states – Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Telangana and Mizoram, the general public on the other hand have welcome the result stating that this is the warning for the Ruling Central government for the upcoming 2019 General Lok Sabha election.
Meanwhile the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) Chief Raj Thackeray, while reacting to the verdict stated that Congress President Rahul Gandhi who was referred as ‘Pappu’ by his opponents has now become ‘Param Pujya’ (most revered). He was referring to Congress’ victory in the Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh Assembly elections with thumping majorities a year after Gandhi took over the party as its President. The party has also staked claimed to form the government in Madhya Pradesh with the support from regional parties and Independents.

Thackeray also pointed out that Gandhi was alone in Gujarat and even in Karnataka. Now Pappu has become Param Pujya.
With regards to the BJP’s performance, he stressed that the party was bound to be defeated because of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Party President Amit Shah’s behaviour in the past four years. Thackeray also claimed that the result is all clear to the people of India that now both the senior BJP leaders have failed on all fronts and they have nothing to show, so they are playing the Ram Mandir card but people are smart enough to see through this.
The political pundits however have stated that the result is a clear indication of Anti- incumbency, at the same time it is not a mandate for the Congress, as in Madhya Pradesh with the support from regional parties and Independents, the party alone could only manage 99 seats, one short of the half way mark with no absolute majority to form government.
The results are purely on the issues of distressed farmers and unemployment, which was not addressed by the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance government led by Modi. The issues like the demonetization and Goods and Services Tax India (GST) was not discussed during the election campaigns, also the Congress leaders claimed that the party did not make any personal attacks or mud slinging statements, as they respect every leader and had only opposed the government’s mis-management.
Other factors leading to the defeat of BJP are unfulfilled assurance of the NDA which stormed into power with the assurance of creating jobs. There was a failure to yield the expected result through Make in India, The National Skill Development Corporation India (NSDC), including the special Star Programme for the North Eastern region which could not achieve the target, due to lack of resource persons on the specific lists of programmes. Next come the unenthusiastic youth who never consider that such skill development programmes will enhance their ability have let to the poor performance of this ambitious flagship programme of NDA.
Next come the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao programme which is a personal campaign of the Government of India under the NDA that aims to generate awareness and improve the efficiency of welfare services intended for girls. But the horrifying assault on girls and women, including the rank holders continues to shock the nation, which only reaffirmed that if the masses refuse to undergo a change of mindset, be it for enhancing skills or respecting the womenfolk in India, it is impossible for any government to simply legislate laws and programmes in Cabinet meetings or Parliament without getting a feel of the nerves of the grassroots.
The next disaster under NDA is the Digital India, where the poor internet services across India and lack of computing skills, mainly in the far flung villages has turned the flagship programmes like the sour grapes. The central government should have setup the infrastructure, mainly the improvement of telecommunication and networks before launching the Digital India.
Next comes the no cash transaction or the plastic money, after the demonetization, NDA is pushing the nation to use e-transaction. Again due to lack of facilities or infrastructure, the bank services are always disturbed due to the ‘system down’ also the poor internet services have turned the ambitious policy into a major failure of the NDA regime.
Next come the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan or Swachh Bharat Mission (‘Clean India Mission) which is a nation-wide campaign in India for the period 2014 to 2019 that aims to clean up the streets, roads and infrastructure of India’s cities, towns, and rural areas. This might have earned laurel outside India, but at ground zero, the nation remains as dirty as ever. It is just a means for the photo shoots for the politicians and the celebrities.
Many more such good projects and schemes under the NDA government which could not take off, either due to lack of infrastructure or poor participation of the public which also needs the further push of social organizations, NGOs, or social activities and not just Ram Temple in Ayodhya which require the last push, let the nation rises and talk of specific issues for individual states.
As the BJP goes back to the drawing board to dissect the outcome of the results, the Congress is occupied in selecting the leaders to head the respect states as Chief Ministers, sifting between the young blood and the seasoned leaders which will surely have an impact on the 2019 general Lok Sabha election.
