SHILLONG, May 18: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has on Thursday reprimanded the Government of Meghalaya for its empty promises and assurances in regard to action taken on various issues of importance.
During a hearing pertaining to the preservation of the Myntdu River which was taken up on Thursday in the eastern zone of NGT at Kolkata, Advocate General of Meghalaya, Dr. Todi submitted that a comprehensive affidavit has been filed by the Chief Secretary, Govt of Meghalaya, pointing out various actions taken on the issue.
The NGT bench however observed that ‘The state of Meghalaya has always been saying that we have issued orders or will issue orders but hardly any actions on ground. This we have been noting in all cases emanating from Meghalaya’.
In this backdrop, the Tribunal said that the applicant will point out on affidavit as to whether the state has actually implemented the orders or not and to bring them all to the notice of the Tribunal, so that it can initiate appropriate actions against the state and its officials.
As such, the tribunal has directed the applicant to file detailed report on compliances. The matter will come up for necessary direction again on July 26, 2017.
