Shillong, Aug 31:
Even though Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma has categorically ruled out possibility of pre – poll alliance with NCP in Meghalaya, Former Rajya Sabha MP and NCP’s North East Observer, Robert Kharshiing, Friday said he will still talk to the Congress leader and try to convince him.
Talking to Meghalaya Times, Kharshiing said he met the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) President, Dr DD Lapang on Thursday night and held preliminary talks on the proposal. Also present in the meeting was the Convener of NCP’s Adhoc Committee Sanbor Shullai.
Though no commitment was given by Dr Lapang on the proposal, Kharshiing said the meeting was a positive exercise in which they discussed and reviewed the political situation in the Country and Meghalaya, and that he will call on the CM, also the Congress Legislative party (CLP) leader, next.
He also maintained that even though Dr Sangma claimed of going as a single party in the next elections, an alliance was very much necessary.
He was of the opinion that Congress in state should not be complacent considering it is predicted to perform poorly in other states. And a streak of losses for Congress before the Lok Sabha elections is not good.
Kharshiing maintained that the CM may not have heard all the details and his comment could have been made off – the – cup.
But taking a firm stance on his proposal, he said if the present MUA government claims to have developed the state then he would take the Shillong – Guwahati road as the benchmark to judge the government’s performance.
According to him, the Shillong – Guwahati road is worse than it ever was and the lack of water and power supply in Garo Hills is an example of the benchmark of the present government.
If this is what it (MUA government) calls development, then it should resign in shame, asserted Kharshiing.
He also pointed out the Planning Commission report dated March 18 – 19, 2012, according to which poverty has give down all over the country but has increased in the tribal areas of Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.
Also, the country was reeling under burning issues of Corruption, poverty, Violence and militancy, unemployment and inflation, and Meghalaya is not far from them.
Kharshiing advocated that the state needed a leader with open mind who listens to everyone and works in collaboration and urged everyone to be inclusive.
He even declared that the period of single party was over with coalition government being the only solution, which is present even in the centre.
In case the state Congress leadership rejected the pre – poll alliance, the NCP leader said he had other alternatives ready but would like to refrain from using those even as he hoped that Dr Sangma realizes the bleak chances Congress has.
